Contained within the information, the school stated, was once an envelope, which learn “Washington’s hair, L.S.S. & (scratched out) GBS from James A. Hamilton given him through his mom, Aug. 10, 1871.” The hair was once far and wide within the envelope, tied jointly through a thread.

The information belonged to Philip J. Schuyler, son of one of the school’s founders, Gen. Philip Schuyler, a friend of Washington’s.
